Space to Be Different: A Creative Exploration of Identity and Play

Space to Be Different (STBD) is not just an art workshop; it’s a philosophy, a journey, and a collaborative space where identity, creativity, and connection come alive. Co-created by Ksenija Kadic, founder of fluidity of self, and Mirela Kulović, a Boston-based artist, STBD combines participatory art and playful experimentation to inspire transformation and self-discovery.

What Is Space to Be Different?

STBD is a dynamic, evolving space that grows with every individual who enters it. It invites participants to step into a world of open-ended exploration, free from the pressure to perform or conform.

At its core is the practice of playing with empty boxes. These ordinary objects are transformed into vessels of imagination, becoming tools for creative expression and self-reflection. For participants, the act of playing with empty boxes sparks a sense of childlike curiosity, allowing them to uncover hidden aspects of themselves.

“There’s no pressure to create, fix, or do anything,” says Ksenija. “The boxes act as portals to unexpected discoveries, helping participants explore identity in spontaneous and playful ways.”

Mirela adds, “The beauty lies in their simplicity. These empty containers invite us to embrace transformation, just as life constantly transforms us.”

Participatory Art: Blurring the Lines Between Creator and Creation

In the STBD participatory art sessions, opens you to explore the possibility of experience in which distinction between creator and creation fades. Participatory art is the heartbeat of this experience, where the act of making becomes a collaborative dance of self-expression and discovery.

This approach encourages participants to see themselves as fluid, evolving beings rather than fixed identities bound by societal expectations. Through art and play, STBD fosters an environment where self-expression flourishes, creativity knows no bounds, and personal transformation takes root.

The Philosophy Behind the Practice

STBD is deeply influenced by fluidity of self, a philosophy developed by Ksenija Kadic and Mirela Kulovic eye for design. This perspective views identity as a dynamic, ever-changing process, inviting people to embrace their multifaceted nature.

“Rigid labels and fixed roles often limit us,” Ksenija explains. “STBD helps participants experience the freedom of fluidity, reconnecting them with their authentic selves.”

For Mirela, the process of transformation is central to both her art and her collaboration with Ksenija.

“Every moment changes us,” Mirela reflects. “When you recognize this, you can live with more intention. STBD is about creating spaces where transformation is celebrated—whether it’s playful, profound, or both.”

How STBD Evolved

The concept of Space to Be Different was born from the nomadic journeys and creative practices of its founders. Ksenija and Mirela met in 2017 after Mirela’s exhibition in Boston. They instantly connected over their shared belief in the transformative power of art and their desire to create a space where identity could be explored without constraints.

Their collaboration deepened during the COVID-19 pandemic when they launched online participatory art sessions. These virtual workshops were for people seeking connection and creative expression during challenging times, proving that STBD’s philosophy transcends physical boundaries.

The Transformative Power of Play

At STBD, play is not just an activity; it’s a gateway to deeper understanding of our transient nature. The act of playing with empty boxes may seem simple, but it invites participants to re-discover the wonder and curiosity of childhood.

“Playfulness allows us to take ourselves less seriously,” says Mirela. “It opens up possibilities for transformation and connection, reminding us of the beauty in simplicity.”

My journey was one of constant movement and adaptation, where I discovered that identity is not fixed but a dynamic exploration. Embracing fluidity of self and the quest for belonging was a driving force for me at STBD. STBD's philosophy finds its roots in the fundamental human need for belonging—belonging to a space where our unique differences are not only accepted but celebrated. In this collaboration, STBD and FoS harmoniously coexist, creating a space where belonging and self-exploration go hand in hand.
